That hilariously dystopian backdrop added the perfect level of pseudo-patriotic B-movie cheesiness that made me smile through all that dying.

Sweet liberty! One of my favorite PS4-era shooters is back with a whole new perspective and it’s up to me and my friends to defend Super Earth in glorious co-op! After going hands-on with Helldivers 2 for three hours, I’m sold on the bold pivot from the original’s top-down view to the sequel’s new third-person perspective, the appetizing roster of deadly gadgets, and the outrageous comedic tone that expertly channels the low-budget action film vibes that pair perfectly with the developer’s live-service ambitions.

As you complete missions, collect loot from points of interest on the galaxy's battlefields, and earn XP, you'll level up and get various currencies that allow you to unlock new weapons and armor pieces.

Plus, some elements of the post-processing, like the screen-space reflections, didn't give very much of an Unreal impression to me. It turns out that the game is using a modified version of the discontinued Autodesk Stingray game engine, which makes more sense. A variant of this engine powered the excellent Warhammer 40K: Darktide, and while Helldivers 2 isn't quite as striking, I think the game looks strong overall. But Environmental critiques are fine but perhaps miss the point: Helldivers 2 is an action-packed title, and much of your time is spent engaging with the game's insect and robotic foes. These firefights can look pretty extraordinary, especially when all four players are tightly clustered, trying to defend an objective. The key here is how enemies react when shot: each bullet strike spawns little bits of blood or smoke, alongside chunks of viscera or mechanical bits. It makes the simple act of firing at enemies satisfying.

Given that the original Helldivers from 2015 is still exclusive, though, we don't suggest getting your hopes up.

So whether you're jumping into your Hellpod for the first time or you've already taken down an onslaught of Terminids and Automatons, here are our tips and tricks to get you started in Helldivers 2.

The prompt for it appears in the War Table menu once you've flown to a planet and have a difficulty selected.

The marks a bit of a delay, as it was originally set to release at the end of this year. Pre-orders will launch on Sept. 22 for both the Standard Edition and the Super Citizen Edition.

Visually, Helldivers 2 benefits immensely from the move from topdown to full third-person 3D visuals. Although the planets are barren, they are studded with bases, hives and wreckage sites, and they provide cover and height where needed. The interplay between players is frenzied and amusing. Controversially, the game has team killing switched on, so if you’re a little wild with your machine gun or nuclear strikes, you can easily take out a pal or two.

By far the biggest way Helldivers 2 switches things up from the original is by moving to the third-person perspective, and so far I’m pleasantly surprised how well that transition works. I was initially skeptical about the change given how much the bird’s eye view was part of the Helldivers 2 Gameplay original’s DNA, but it only took a matter of seconds for my concerns to disappear. Getting closer to the action feels great and allows for some really hilarious moments, like when I accidentally called in an airstrike that took out the rest of my team or when I found myself surrounded by absolutely terrifying robots and used my jetpack to leap to safety.

If you’re not into playing with friends, it’s still super easy to play with randoms without using the mic or even solo. I think with friends is most enjoyable. Do your part to deliver sweet liber-tea!

That means friends and loved ones will need to purchase and play the game on a separate system in order to enjoy it with you.

I’m not gonna lie. It’s been a while since I’ve played the first Helldivers game, and this one blows it out of the water. The transition to third-person is absolutely perfect for the game, and leaning more into the parody of enlisting in the military makes it even better.

You’ll also encounter optional objectives to complete, requiring a small detour with your teammates, and of course, requiring more ammunition. But you’ll be rewarded for your efforts.
